Taking Action on ARRA: ArtThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides many opportunities for arts and cultural organizations to access government funding through traditional and non-traditional ways.
Traditional Ways:
Although the deadlines have passed, the ARRA included specific funding for job preservation in the arts in the form of $50 million to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). For more information on other ways to access these funds, please visit the NEA Recovery website, as there are still opportunities to seek out grants supported by NEA funding. Namely, regional, state and even some local arts agencies will be offering competitive grants aimed at job preservation in the arts sector, though each agency will have their own guidelines, requirements and application process. Please note that each organization is only eligible to receive a grant from one of these four potential sources (i.e. NEA, regional arts organization, state arts agency or local arts agency). You should contact your regional, state and local arts agencies to find out how they plan to distribute their fund and their anticipated timeline.
Non-Traditional Ways:
In addition to the arts and culture funding through the NEA, there are many other potential funding opportunities for arts organizations. To view the list of potential ways arts organizations can access other ARRA fund composed by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, please click here. In particular, there is funding available through the Department of Labor for professional development training that can be accessed by arts organizations for artists. There is also potential funding for arts organization available through the Community Development Block Grants.
To learn about all of the ARRA grant opportunities and eligibility requirements, visit Recovery Act and Grants.gov.
In addition to the potential opportunity for funding, arts organizations have an even greater opportunity to expand their networks and develop relationships with non-traditional agencies and organizations to help support their missions and benefit their constituencies.
