Red Airmail Stamp

Andy Warhol, Red Airmail Stamp, 1962; Acrylic and pencil on linen;
6 x 6 inches (15.2 x 15.2 cm)

Chosen as the symbol of the 2004-2005 biennial report, Red Airmail Stamp by Andy Warhol represents several key values of the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation. First, the stamp symbolizes the benefits of open and effective communication.

At the Foundation, we strive for clear communication with our grantees and value good communication among those of us who work for and with the Foundation. Though we can always do better, through effective communication we have deepened and refined our work over the course of the past two years.

Second, a stamp on a letter enables us to maintain and strengthen connections with those who share our mission. As we travel -- often by air -- miles and miles each year to and from meetings, site visits and Boardmeetings, we connect and re-connect, developing new relationships and rekindling old ones with grantees and co-funders, and Tremaine family members who participate in the work of the foundation.
