Roy Lichtenstein | Head with Blue Shadow | 1965
Glazed ceramic, 15 x 8 1/4 x 8 in. (38.1 x 21 x 20.3 cm). © Estate of Roy Lichtenstein Head with Blue Shadow depicts the archetypal blonde movie star in a melodramatic classical bust with blue paint standing in for stark, unrealistic shadows. Like his cup and saucer ceramic sculptures, Ben-day dots on the head create a false sense of hyper-reality. Lichtenstein made ten versions of this iconic blonde, each with different colors and shadows. According to art historian Constance Glenn, "Those colors had to be consistent with the nature of the drawing and the nature of the idea, which was the drawing of an illusion so artificial that for instance you would never accept a certain area as a shadow but you would know that it was meant to represent a shadow." |
